International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Unfold Zero

Thank you for joining the co-sponsors for the United Nations commemoration event for the first International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The UN commemoration event was a great success with a very good turn-out from UN officials, government delegations and NGO representatives. Most encouraging was the global support for the event with nearly 100 NGOs from around the world co-sponsoring the event– including those active in peace, disarmament, human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development.

Parliamentary support was also strong with joint cross-party statements from members of the European Parliament, Korean Parliament andJapanese parliament, and a resolution adopted by the Costa Rica Parliament. The Inter-Parliamentary Union released a briefing to its 164 member parliaments supporting the day and encouraging them to engage in the UNFOLD Zero campaign.

You can see a report of the event and photos at ‘To disarm’ must be in present tense, says senior UN rep in Geneva.  The commemoration event was a flying start to the numerous actions and events around the world held to mark the day. In addition it inspired Mr Mark Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations in Geneva, to pen a superb blog on Huffington Post – entitled

We Should Rally Against Nuclear Weapons Like We Do Climate Change
